Course Presentation

This programme offers students the opportunity to enhance their level of technical knowledge, understanding and skill.  The programme will develop further the graduate’s skill in core civil engineering areas as well as more specialist areas such as new software and information systems and renewable energy technologies.  The graduates will gain experience in operating as individuals and as members of a team working towards a common goal. The extensive final year project, supervised by design lecturers with industry experience, prepares students for work in a modern engineering practice.  During the course of their studies students will carry out experiments in our laboratories, use computer aided design and specialised software to gain an understanding of the behaviour of engineering structures and the practical skill sets to design solutions to engineering challenges.
The course is structured as follows:

Year 1
•    Geotechnical Engineering
•    Structural Design
•    Environmental Engineering
•    Infrastructure Planning and Management
•    Group Project

Year 2
•    Individual Research project
•    Renewable Energy for Civil Engineers
•    Transportation Engineering
•    Advanced Mathematics
•    Structural Analysis

Awarding Body

Dundalk Institute of Technology - Add-on Level 8 Honours Degree

Who Should Apply?

Graduates of this programme may work in structural, water, public health, renewables, transportation and geotechnical branches of the civil engineering industry. As well as developing knowledge in structural, geotechnical, and environmental engineering, it will improve management and employability skills or enhance your position if currently employed in the public service or private industry. In contrast with the more mathematical BEng Civil Engineering elsewhere, this course places more emphasis on civil engineering practice and design.

How To Apply

Applicants should complete a Lifelong Learning Application Form (see Download Forms button to the left) and submit together with an up-to-date CV and scans of academic qualifications to:

B.Sc. (Hons) Degree in Civil Engineering part-time course,

Alternatively you can email a scan of the application form, cv and academic qualifications to parttime@dkit.ie

Course Duration

The course takes place over 2 academic years.  Learners will be expected to attend DkIT one day per week, all-day Fridays 9.00am-6.00pm.

Please note that the delivery of years will alternate, depending on your year of entry. This does not mean you are starting on second year modules, they are simply the second semester modules from a full time one year programme. So the cycle you enter on is not more or less difficult than the other.

Also you should be aware that it will be necessary to attend for 3 full days in January prior to recommencement of normal classes and 3 full days during the Easter break in order to facilitate/deliver one of the modules. The exact dates and number of days will be agreed with all students. Ample notice will be given to all students and dates agreed to facilitate employment commitments where possible. This is also cyclical and will only happen for one of your two years again depending on your year of entry.

Starting Date

Induction Day: Friday 8th September.
Classes commence: Friday 15th September. (Subject to change)

Entry Requirements

Applicants to this programme MUST have successfully completed a Level 7, Bachelor of Engineering (ordinary) in Civil Engineering, Building Engineering, Structural Engineering, or equivalent with an overall pass and a minimum overall average of 50%.
